Windsurfing 28th July 2010
Becalmed....
With no plans at all this evening and the rest of the family out I decided to go for a gentle windsurf on the river, there was never going to be a lot of wind but the forecasts were suggesting 10mph so enough for longboard and 9.4 for some gentle cruising.
I got rigged up and headed out there was a little bit of breeze and with some pumping I was making good headway, although I was feeling warm with the wetsuit on. When I got around the corner by the docks there was a little more breeze as it funneled up the river from Penryn, As I sailed across the bay I could see some drizzle coming in over the town so I decided to head back toward Mylor in case the wind dropped.
Needless to say I didn't get all the way back before the wind switched off completely, there were dingys out racing too and they also came to a standstill. I spent some time trying to zig zag and pump my way back in, and then resorted to padding the board but couldn't get the sail to balance neatly as I paddled what with it being a 9.4. So I got out my spare line tied it on the front layed the sail across the stern and jumped in and towed the board home, does this constitute a new sport windsurf towing, or tug windsurfer, hmm maybe not, glad I had the wetsuit though. In the end it was only around 300m to tow the kit back into the shore and a little walk to get back to where I started.
At the bottom of this page is the GPS track, the wind died where the green line is, the red line is the paddling, sailing in no wind and the white line is where I swam back in, much more direct and effective..
Probably a pretty good exercise for me this evening, and beats watching tele...
